My name is Jan Steele and I play and teach the saxophone, flute, clarinet and music theory and I'm a composer. I'm a very experienced music teacher with years of experience teaching saxophone, clarinet, flute, music theory and jazz improvization in state and independent schools, colleges, universities, schools of music and privately. Nowadays I confine my music teaching to my home in Caversham, Reading, Berkshire. As well as being a music teacher I am a STAT - qualified teacher of the Alexander Technique which I teach at the Royal Academy of Music in London. I have a full CRB disclosure, and full public liability insurance. I also have DfE Qualified Teacher Status. If you are thinking of having lessons with me and would like to talk to a current (adult) pupil or the parents of a current child pupil first then please contact me. You can have a trial lesson, a few lessons, or a one off lesson with no future commitment. The most important thing to know is this - I aim to make my teaching fun. This is because music is my life and it is the only thing I want to do, and I hope that my enthusiasm for it is transmitted to my students. The most fun to be had from playing a musical instrument is when you work at it, but you don't have to be a musical genius to have fun learning!
I have always enjoyed the experience of teaching people to play a musical instrument, even if they are a complete beginner and lacking in confidence. Most importantly, producing a good sound on a wind instrument really seems to boost a student's confidence, and this is one of the things I really try to focus on from the start.
I have always been self-employed in music since I finished in higher education
Not all my students are high achievers, but I hope that most of them enjoy playing or making music in one way or another. Recently I have had some really big successes, 3 students currently studying at the Royal College of Music Junior Department, one in the National Youth Orchestra, one in the National Childrens' Orchestra, two having just completed 2 years at National Youth Jazz Orchestra Academy have moved on to University/Music College to study music. In music theory, I'm particularly pleased with one student who gained 100% for grade 5, and another who gained 98% for grade 8.
I can teach online provided that the conditions are good (which includes having a good set up at the student's end - a good microphone, speakers or headphones, and camera). However I find that with beginners the best results are obtained with in situ teaching. I can better assess the quality of reeds and instruments when the student is in the same room with me. Teaching music theory online is however much more productive.
Aerating the room, cleaning surfaces, sterilising reeds and mouthpieces.

I have been having weekly lessons with Nicol for around ten weeks now, and I started as a complete beginner to acoustic guitar. Nicol has patiently and effectively taught me to play numerous songs that I have asked to learn, as well as incorporating useful and interesting musical theory into my lessons so that I am learning the 'why' at the same time as the 'how'. Nicol's musical knowledge is incredible, and her teaching style is so fun and patient, so I am learning a lot very quickly and I am inspired to keep practicing each week and working on what I have learned! Nicol has helped me to understand strumming patterns whilst singing at the same time as playing guitar, and the way she explains the techniques is enabling me to make great progress each week. I am enjoying my lessons with Nicol so much and I always look forward to our sessions! The logistics of booking and planning my lessons is also always efficient and simple. Thank you so much Nicol and River Music School!

I am loving River Music School London. I’ve been there for a few almost a year and the teacher is very good and have an easy way to do the piano lessons. I am enjoying my piano class at River Music School London.

I have piano lessons with Nicol and believe I've got the best music teacher ever. Nicol is professional, punctual, committed to getting the best out of me, encouraging and always believing in me and challenging me even at times when I've doubted I'll get there. My piano lessons are never boring, each session with Nicol whether face to face or online are fantastic. Nicol not only is super gifted, talented and has mastered her craft, but she has the incredible ability to teach people of any age. I would recommend Nicol to anyone. Thank you.
