What’s the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?

Registered dietitians are qualified to assess, diagnose and treat dietary problems or nutritional needs. They also tend to help clients with special dietary requirements or medical conditions. To be a dietitian, you’ve got to be registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). Many dietitians work within the NHS as opposed to privately, although you can still find private dietitians to help advise you on your eating habits. Whereas nutritionists are more likely to be the ones advising on weight loss or sport nutrition. Nutritionists can be registered with the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN), but they don't have to be.

What qualifications do you need to be a nutritionist?

To become qualified as a nutritionist, I had to complete a course run by the UKVRN. After completing the course, I became qualified as a registered nutritionist. This means that all my clients can check my qualifications and experience online. Clients can therefore be confident in my abilities, as they know that I'm qualified under a trustworthy organisation.

What’s the most common reason why clients come to you?

Weight loss is the most common reason that new clients come to me. They often find it difficult to know how to get the right nutrients into their diets without feeling hungry or unsatisfied. But over the last few years, I’ve had more and more people coming to me with IBS-related issues. I think that's because more people are recognising the symptoms of IBS and are getting diagnosed. They then come to nutritionists or dietitians for guidance on how to alter their eating habits to help relieve their symptoms.

I am 2 months into working with Vicki on my Food Plan. I started 2 weeks before Xmas so have been undertaking the change during the festive season and holiday period plus, I have celebrated a milestone birthday with several beautiful social events. Despite all the enticements and challenges for food and drink, I have found it useful and encouraging to stay on my Food Plan. I have not 'blown out' too much at all. Significantly, I have found the way Vicki has educated and supported me to make dietary changes to be magnificent. I could never have done it by myself or alone. The initial stages of adjusting were difficult overcoming habits and cravings. Also, it took me time to digest all the learning so I could apply it practically – put the new learning into practice/action. Fundamentally, Vicki has assisted me to change my attitude to how I live, eat and drink – a real attitudinal shift. I have always known a lot about health and mostly been healthy however with aging, a pressured workload and being time poor often, I had slipped into not being as attentive to myself as previously. Vicki has helped me ‘kick start’ back to managing my choices more respectfully and responsibly. Most noticeably, I no longer suffer severe stomach aches and cramps nor muscle pains. To me this is amazing and indicative of all that Vicki has taught me. I felt as though having Vicki as a witness (I did imagine she was invisibly watching me all the time, so guilt trips were frequent!!). Vicki has also helped me to appreciate the body and science of what goes in, and it's impact upon how my body functions accordingly. This is staying with me as a lasting learning. I still have another month to go to complete my 3 months. It is the best thing I have invested in. It always seemed in the busy schedule of life not the right time to start but now I am so glad I did start when I did despite all the challenges. I can strongly encourage and recommend Vicki and her nutritional approach which is comprehensive and works. Big ongoing gratitude Vicki. Karen
